Do I need need a State ID number for my 1099 payers on income that I didn't have state withholding? There's no state ID slot on the form, so I don't have it.
This involves form CT-EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit). I had two major clients this year that I needed to receive 1099-MISC forms from. On the form it has their TIN (I imagine it's their EIN). When I got to filling out state tax info, it asked me to list up to three sources of income that I did not have state tax withheld.
My old job that I left filled in automatically from my W2 (they weren't withholding state, no big deal).
But the other two slots for my big freelance clients were empty. I put in the TIN as the Federal ID number because that's all I had, left the state ID blank, and put in the amount I was paid.
When I got to the checkup round for state, TurboTax flagged the missing state IDs. Other than calling up my clients and asking them, I don't know how I'm supposed to know this info since it's not provided on the 1099-MISC.

Did some more digging and found more info further back when the info was first requested. From the link above the entry fields:
"If your state identification number is less than 10 to 13 digits or you don't have one, add zeros (0) at the end of your employer's or payer's identification number and enter the number in the state identification column. This will meet Connecticut's 10- to 13-digit state identification requirement and ensure that your return gets processed as quickly as possible."
