Dependent question

My 22 year old daughter started her first full-time job this past Sept. Until then I was supporting her. Can I claim her as a dependent from Jan.-Aug. 2022? Or do I have to decide whether or not to claim her as a dependent for the whole year. If I was supporting her for 8 (out of 12 months) can I claim her as a dependent for the whole year? Also how will it impact my taxes (amount due) when I no longer claim her as a dependent?

Hi there! I'll be happy to assist with this.

Few general rules that are important in this situation:

    - is your child a full time student?

    - did you provide more than half of her support?

    - did the child live with you for more than half a year (college campus counts as lived with you if you supported her)

    - Your daughters income, per IRS, she must file her own return if:

    1. unearned income was more than $1,100.

    2. earned income was more than $12,550.

    3. gross income was more than the larger of—

      1. $1,100, or

      2. earned income (up to $12,200) plus $350.

You may try using this IRS tool to help you determine if you can claim your daughter as a dependent:

    https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/whom-may-i-claim-as-a-dependent

When it comes to your taxes, if you did qualify for certain tax credits in the past (child tax credit, earned income credit, education credit), based on having a dependent on your return OR if your filing status changes based on the fact that let's say you can't claim your daughter as a dependent, than yes, this might affect your taxes.
