Hello,
I have never filed for tax-refund but I am trying to file tax refund for my year. However my dad claims as a dependent and thinks that I cannot file for a tax refund with my W2, because it would mess his taxes up. Can I still file for a tax-refund without it affecting him.

CAN I FILE A RETURN IF I AM A DEPENDENT?
If you can be claimed as a dependent on your parents’ return, you can still file your own return so that you can receive a refund of taxes withheld. (You will not get back anything for Social Security or Medicare withheld.) Be sure that on your own return you say that you can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.
If you can be claimed as a dependent and you answer the question in My Info incorrectly, here is what happens if you e-file first: Your Social Security number goes into the IRS system as having been used. When your parents try to e-file, their e-file is rejected and they will find it impossible to e-file their own tax return. Then they will have to print, sign and mail their return and wait for months for it to be processed. You, meanwhile, will have to file an amended tax return on a special form called a 1040X, which also takes months for the IRS to process. So make sure you know the correct answer to "Can anyone claim you as a dependent on their tax return?"
Yes, you can file your own W-2, but you must mark that you are being claimed by someone. This is found at the beginning of the program in the Personal Info section.
There are qualifications for being a dependent. If you do not meet either category, your father can't claim you.
Qualifying Child
Relationship — the taxpayer’s child or stepchild (whether by blood or adoption), foster child, sibling or step-sibling, or a descendant of one of these.
Residence — has the same principal residence as the taxpayer for more than half the tax year. Exceptions apply, in certain cases, for children of divorced or separated parents, kidnapped children, temporary absences, and for children who were born or died during the year.
Age — must be under the age of 19 at the end of the tax year, or under the age of 24 if a full-time student for at least five months of the year, or be permanently and totally disabled at any time during the year.
Support — did not provide more than one-half of his/her own support for the year.
Qualifying Relative
You can claim a child, relative, friend, fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2022 taxes as long as they meet all of the following requirements :
@lrblad And...as long as you file correctly and say that you can be claimed as a dependent, your W-2 income has no effect whatsoever on your father's income tax return. We see lots of nervous parents whose kids have first jobs -- they do not understand the way it works.
not only can you file, but you must file to get your refund. filing your return will not mess up dad's as long as you indicate when doing your return that someone else can claim you as a dependent.
You must file a return if any of the following apply.
• Your unearned income was over $1,150 (dividends, interest) if so, post back because you may be subject to the kiddie tax rules for filing.
• Your earned income was over $12,950. (W-2 and self-employment income) or you had net earnings from self-employment of at least $400.
• Your gross income was more than the larger of—
• $1,150, or
• Your earned income (up to $12,550) plus $400.
