not only can you file, but you must file to get your refund. filing your return will not mess up dad's as long as you indicate when doing your return that someone else can claim you as a dependent.
You must file a return if any of the following apply.
• Your unearned income was over $1,150 (dividends, interest) if so, post back because you may be subject to the kiddie tax rules for filing.
• Your earned income was over $12,950. (W-2 and self-employment income) or you had net earnings from self-employment of at least $400.
• Your gross income was more than the larger of—
• $1,150, or
• Your earned income (up to $12,550) plus $400.
