Cost Basis Entry - Turbo Tax Software Error?

Instruction provided to manually enter cost basis not reported on 1099-b below.

However, Step 4 does not come up.

HELP!

 

If it is blank, leave it blank. (This will match the 1099-B posting)

  1. Scroll to the bottom of your 1099-B entry screen
  2. Check the box for The cost basis is incorrect or missing on my 1099-B 
  3. On the new screen None of these apply.
  4. I know my cost basis and need to make an adjustment.
  5. Enter your actual Cost Basis

checking the box in Step 2 should be sufficient to get there.

The screen that contains step number 4 is entitled We noticed there's an issue with cost basis...Let us know if you'd like to make any changes.  On that screen is the option I know my cost basis and need to make an adjustment.  

 

And yes, make sure you check the box The cost basis is incorrect or missing on my 1099-B.

Hour on phone last week with TT support (extremely nice and professional) however no solution.  Software is not working correctly. Checking box does not bring up next screen to enter cost basis. 

Only suggestion was to change data by manually keying into 1099-B.

Not sure how this effects the how/what IRS sees and will not risk a mismatch of the 1099-B.

Additionally, I did try this, and the calc does not seem to alter result.

After decades of loyal use, losing faith in TT...

Would appreciate an update from TT if/when update to the software might appear, etc.

I'm not sure what is different.  I'm in TT Premier, and this is what I see.  Where does yours differ?

Third screen is missing.

Did all the basics: log in/log out; change browser; clear cache; delete entry; key manually; delete and pull direct..

No Third screen.

There is NO screen 3 

Box IS checked.

I can't resolve this issue without getting to see the file.  We have a method for viewing the file, but all of your personal data will be suppressed.  I will not be me viewing the file it will be a team that focuses on situations like yours.  

 

If you are willing to share the file with us, this is the method.

 

You can send one to us by following the directions below:”  

You will get a TOKEN NUMBER.  Please share that with us so we can respond with our results.  Please respond to @JohnB5677

 

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen. 
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools  
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token number in a reply to this post.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

 I apologize for the inconvenience. Please follow these steps:

  • Open or return to TurboTax.
  • In TurboTax, search for “1099-B” and then select the “Jump to” link in the search results.
  • If you see Your investments and savings, select the sale, edit and click the pencil to edit.
  • Select the title in the Sales Section.
  • Select the type of investment.
  • Enter a description in Box 1a.
  • Enter the date you acquired the investment in Box1b.
  • Box 1c enter the date sold.
  • Enter the proceeds in Box1d.
  • For Box 1e, enter the correct cost basis
  • Put a check in “The cost basis is incorrect or missing.”
  • Continue.
  • Select if any of the situations apply to this sale
  • Continue.
  • Select “I know my cost basis and enter the actual cost.
  • Continue and you will return to the Review screen.
