How do you make TurboTax understand that? Every time I delete my grandson as a dependent, it makes me change my filing status to single. How do I file HOH status but remove him as a dependent?

You are trying to do something that will not work. In order to file as Head of Household, you MUST have a qualified dependent. Without a dependent, you cannot file as HOH. You file as Single.
Am I Head of Household?

If you qualify as Head of Household, when you enter your marital status (single or married filing separately) into MyInfo, and then enter your qualifying dependent, TurboTax will offer HOH as your filing status.
If your grandson is of age, be sure to enter his age and count him as a member of your household, but not a dependent.
Headed household is a filing status for single parents and similar persons. You must provide care in your home for at least one qualifying person, who is almost always your child or grandchild dependent under age 19 (or full time student under age 24). (There are some uncommon types of qualifying person, but it is almost always a child dependent.)
Why are you removing your grandchild as a dependent? Why do you think you should still be allowed to file as HOH?
