The father of my son already claimed my son  and I did not know and it keeps saying his social wrong. How do I discard it so I can still submit it

    To delete a dependent,

Click the "Personal Info" tab.  It is locate at the top left of your screen, on the gray bar.

    Click the "Continue" button.

Find the line that describes your dependents and click the "edit" button.

Select the dependent you want to delete and delete it.

Note:  If you actually qualify to claim this person as a dependent, you may want to either

    1) delete  the dependent and file electronically now, and later file an amended return by paper claiming the dependent, OR

    2) File by paper now.  This will likely result in a letter from the IRS to you and your son's father asking you to justify who can claim him as a dependent.

    3)  Coordinate this with the father.

Info about who can claim a person as a dependent follows.

The rules regarding who is a dependent are available

    https://www.irs.gov/publications/p501#en_US_2021_publink[phone number removed]

At this site, on the left, click "Table 5. Overview of the Rules for Claiming a Dependent"

This explains whether or not you can claim them as a dependent.

I suggest you also refer to https://www.irs.gov/publications/p501#en_US_2021_publink[phone number removed]

which explains rules for claiming a dependent.

Click on the blue "Dependent" link on the left side of the screen.

If you believe that the father of your son did not have the right to claim your son as a dependent but you do, then finish your return with your son on it, print it, and mail it. You won't be able to e-file the return with your son on it.

Then, in a few months, the IRS will notice that they have two returns both claiming the same dependent, and they will reach out to you and to his father asking you for documentation to show who has the right to claim the child.

The solution to you getting to claim your son without this hassle is to e-file in the future before his father files.

Could the issue be that my daughter has a job this year so I filed her taxes as well? Would that explain her SS# being on two tax returns?

    Thanks!

Yes, that could be the problem.

Check her return to see if the "Someone can claim you as a dependent" is checked.

Assuming you are eligible to claim her as a dependent, It should be checked (on her return).

If it is not checked, and you want to claim her, then she will need to amend her return with that change.

In turbotax, that box is changed under "Personal Info"  >  "You and your family"

On the line for dependents, click the "Edit" button and

Check the box indicating she can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return.

To check her return, form 1040 in turbotax

Click the "Forms" icon in the blue bar at the top right of your screen.
From the list of forms, click the form you want to review (Form 1040, in this case)
Review as many forms as needed.
Hint: You can also review your state(s) forms here.
To return to the step-by-step process, click the "step-by-step" which is in the blue bar at the top right of your screen, where the "Forms" icon formerly was located.
