child tax credit

I was not able to claim my 20 year old college student this year.  He lived with us more than half the year and he made over $4700.  I thought that if he lived with us more than half the year we could still claim him.  Is that not correct?

Not if he makes over $4700.  That's seen as paying more than half his support.

What about the Claiming Other Dependents?  From what I see on the TurboTax site, if he is my child, the income amount (over $4700) doesn't apply.  If he was not my child, it would apply.  Does the income amount still apply to children?  This is where I am looking:  https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/family/rules-for-claiming-a-dependent-on-your-tax-return/L8LODb...

That rule only applies if he is

  • under 24 AND
  • a full-time student.

If he is not both of those things, the $4700+ income means you can't claim him.

Qualifying child:

  • They're related to you.
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a US citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • There's no age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

He is both, yet Turbotax didn't give me the credit.  Not sure what I did wrong along the way.  Do I need to start over or adjust what I entered?  I thought I had both pieces of information correct when I entered his information.

Yes, if he is both, delete the dependent and re-enter him - go through the questions slowly, there is one about support that can be confusing.
