Child tax credit and dependent

I’m wondering how the child tax credit will affect my tax returns this year? We just had the baby a few days ago. I am also wondering since my girlfriend did not work all year and has been dependent on me how would that affect my return as well? We are living in the same household for the past two years. She is 21 years old so would this even affect me at all or am I even able to claim her?

Child tax credit and dependent

Hi Julienne1,

Congratulations on the birth of your child.  For 2022 you will be able to claim the baby as a qualifying child.  You will be able to claim your girlfriend as a qualifying relative if she meets the following criteria:

If all of the statements below are true, you can claim someone as a dependent.

  • Relationship: The person lives in your home for the entire year and is considered to be a member of your household. If they don't live with you, they need to be related to you.
  • Income: Generally, their income is less than $4,300 (not including Social Security and welfare).
  • Support: Generally, you provide more than half the person's support.
  • Marital status: Generally, a dependent can't do their taxes with a spouse (married filing jointly). They also can't be a dependent on someone else's return.
  • Nationality: The person is a United States citizen; or a resident or national of the U.S., Canada or Mexico.

Please let us know if you have additional questions on this matter.

Child tax credit and dependent

Hello @Julienne1,

Congrats on the new baby!  Since your baby was born in 2022, you will be eligible to claim the Child Tax Credit when you file your 2022 taxes.  Currently the credit is 2,000 for every dependent under the age of 16.  Income thresholds for single taxpayers and heads of households are set at 200,000 to qualify.   Please note that TurboTax will ask you questions as you prepare your 2022 return to verify that she can be claimed as a dependent.  More information on qualifying for the Child Tax Credit can be found here: https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/family/child-tax-credit/L9ZIjdlZz

You can also refer to this TurboTax article here for more information: https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/family-tax-credits-deductions/new-depend...

For your girlfriend, the IRS defines a dependent as a "qualifying child", or "a qualifying relative."   You can refer to this TurboTax article for more information and to see if she qualifies as an other dependent.  https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/family/rules-for-claiming-a-dependent-on-your-tax-return/L8LODb...

Congrats again!
