IRS reduced my Turbo Tax verified return, claiming I cannot claim my handicapped Wife as a dependent. IRS claims I need to fill out a form and adjust taxes. I spoke to someone here, they said experts would help free of charge.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You can never claim your spouse as a dependent ... so you need to first remove the wife/dependent that the IRS disallowed which may have also changed your filing status. When your return looks like the way the IRS changed it only then should you amend the return to add the spouse to a joint return.
Here is a link to the TurboTax Phone Number.
A spouse can never be claimed as a dependent, even if disabled or if the spouse has no income. Instead you should be filing joint return so that you get the standard deduction for a married couple and all of the credits and deductions a married couple is eligible to receive.
Since you filed incorrectly, you can amend on a Form 1040X. There should be no cost unless something you enter on the amended return requires an upgrade to a higher software version.
Why did Turbo Tax not catch this "error"? That is why I pay to do taxes here, I am not an expert. Can someone help me at turbo Tax, or do I need to take my businees elsewhere? Been trying to get answers on this for months now, do not have time to deal with this working full time Night shift, and fulltime caretaker of my handicapped wife. Seems I should be able to claim the IRS as dependents, they are stealing half of my paycheck, and offering zero help.
When the software asked if you were married in 2021 how did you answer? When it asked if you wanted to file together with your spouse--how did you answer? The software could not know if the dependent you entered was a spouse---it could just as easily have been your sister or some other relative that you were claiming as a dependent. The software cannot detect every possible user error. The software does its calculations based on the way you reply to the questions.
When you amend, remove your spouse as a dependent. Click edit by her name and remove her. Then go back through the My Info section for YOUR name. When it asks "were you married in 2021?" say YES. When it asks if you want to file together with your spouse--say YES. Then it will give you the screens to enter your spouse as the person you are filing a joint return with--go through those screens and enter her information carefully.
