CARES ACT Withdrawal Spread Over Three Years

I recently filed an amended tax filing for 2020 to include my 1099-R for a CARES ACT withdrawal that occurred in 2020 that I am spreading over the three year period.  That amended tax filing was completed on April 13, 2022, and mailed in as instructed.

I entered the 1099-R withdrawal information in my 2021 tax filing, but TurboTax is not prompting me for the "exception" for the CARES ACT and allowing me to spread the withdrawal over three years and removing the early withdrawal penalty.

What do I need to enter in TurboTax to correct this?

You would NOT enter the 2020 1099-R information again in 2021- you will need the information from the 8915-E to complete the 2021 8915-F.

That's the issue I am having - the form 8915-E information is not pulling to the 2021 TurboTax file. How do I import that from the 2020 TurboTax?

Both versions are on the same computer, but I can't find form 8915 in the 2021 version to make any entries or to check what was previously filed on 8915-E.

Please follow these steps to report the 2nd portion of the COVID distribution or any repayment:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on the "Search" on the top and type “1099-R”
  3. Click on “Jump to 1099-R”
  4. If you do not have any 2021 1099-R answer "No" to "Did you get a 1099-R in 2021?" (If you have any other 1099-R then enter all 1099-R and after entering your last 1099-R click "Continue" on the “Review your 1099-R info” screen)
  5. Answer "Yes" to the "Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2021?" screen
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen

Please verify that you check the box next to "If this was a Coronavirus-related distribution reported in 2020 check here". Also, make sure you enter the amount from Form 8915-E, line 9 twice (if it was not from an IRA) or enter the amount from Form 8915-E, line 17 twice (if it was from an IRA). This amount should be 1/3 of your 2020 COVID distribution.
