I am disappointed in Turbotax now having the feature to file an extension electronically via the desktop app. Especially since I already paid for it and feel it is the best value each year when I purchase through Costco. That said, it doesn't give me the ability to file an extension electronically. Is it possible for me to file my extension electronically via an online account, then officially file all my taxes via the desktop app after extension is granted? or would that lock me into using the online account version of turbotax? I think this is incredibly frustrating and should be a basic feature available to all users of the desktop app.

Yes, you can e-file the extension request online and complete your tax return using the desktop editions.
Go to this TurboTax website - https://turbotax.intuit.com/irs-tax-extensions/
Okay. I need to use turbotax premier when filing. I don't want to have to purchase that again via the online version. Can I just use the free online version, then premier when filing? If so, the online version asks me all the questions on what pertains to my situation, and I assume will then funnel me into requiring me to purchase the premier version. any advice regarding that? Do I just answer the questions in a way that would lead the online version to recommending the free account?
Yes, you can use any of the online editions to just start a tax return and then you can e-file the extension, no purchase is necessary. Once the extension is e-filed just close the online window.
