If your refund seems like a lot, check your entries especially your W-2 withholding or any other tax form that has withholding.

If you've entered your forms correctly, you may have too much taxes withheld from your paychecks for your tax situation.

  • If you like the bigger refund, you don't have to do anything.
  • If you'd like to have more money in your pocket throughout the year and a lower refund at tax time, ask your HR or payroll department to adjust your tax withholding forms.
  • For federal withholding, it's form W-4.

Is it giving you the Recovery rebate credit on line 30?  Did you get the first and second Stimulus payments?  You might need to enter the amounts you already got.

I had another (layman) look at it and it looks like Im getting earned income credit (line 27) for my son even though I answered the question about dependents, saying his dad was claiming him. It even says as I go back through the steps that he didnt qualify because I said that.  Yet when I print it, the EIC is there.

I put both stimulus amounts in..for some reason its calculating it as if I am claiming my son as a dependent even though I answered that my ex husband was claiming him this year. It says on the app he does not qualify but on the printed page, theres an amount on the EIC line...?

You can qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit if your child lives with you, but you are allowing the other parent to claim your child.

There is a special rule for divorced or separated parents or parents who live apart for the last 6 months of the calendar year. If the requirements of the special rule are satisfied, then the child is treated as the qualifying child of the noncustodial parent for purposes of the child tax credit/credit for other dependents, while the custodial parent may claim the dependent care credit and EITC, under the general rules.
