Can I electronically file if my W2 says federal tax withheld 25K is greater than total income 15K. I was out of work all year from a work related injury.

@Critter-3 ?

no you can't e-file. are you sure the correct withholding was reported and you enter the correct amount?  this is a red flag when withholding is more than the pay. where does the excess come from? if you received non-taxable compensation there should have been no withholding.  also being unable to e-file federally will prevent e-filing state if you are subject to state income taxes.

How in god's green earth can you possibly have more withheld from your box 1 earnings for federal taxes than you made in wages all year ???    Is the W-2 incorrect ?

Even if it is correct the IRS will not allow you to efile ... you would have to paper file and send a copy of that absurd W-2 so they can double check with the employer for accuracy.

Yes, I was out for the last year from a work related injury, I just found out that wages amount is not your total income, but the amount that is taxable. I also found out that I’m also not able to file electronically, thank you for the help

Just did research, on a W2 the wages amount is not the total amount of your earnings for the year, but the amount that is taxable. I had a work related injury and have been out the entirety of 2022. Even though my gross pay was 138K for the year only 15k is taxable. I too thought there was an error with my W2. I appreciate, everyone’s input
