Can I check first how much refund before deciding to file?

You can complete a tax return. You are the only one who has the ability to file the return so it is up to you. In order to file you have to go all the way through the FILE section and click a big orange button that says "Transmit my returns now." However, if you owe tax due, you are required to file--like it or not.

After you complete your federal tax return and before going through the File section to pay for the online edition you are using the Refund will by shown on the Refund meter at the top of the web page.

Or you can view the Form 1040 and the federal tax refund, if any, will be on Line 34.

You can view your Form 1040 at any time using the online editions. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.
