California Residency (Non-US citizen moved out of USA permanently)

I was living in California till March 4th 2024.

I have been in California since 2016 on temporary visas.

On 4th March 2024, I left the USA permanently and moved abroad to a foreign country.

For federal tax purposes I am considered a resident alien in 2024 because I meet the substantial presence test.

1. What would be my residency status in California for 2024?

2. Could I file as a part-year non-resident from 5th March 2024?

3. Also I did not have any health coverage post the end of March 2024 (since I left the USA permanently), do I need to pay the health insurance penalty for California?

1.  After you left CA, you would be considered a CA non-Resident.  For the beginning of they year, you would be considered a CA resident and need to file a CA Part year resident return for income earned through March 5th.

2. Unless you had CA source income, you would not need to file a return for the part of the year that you were not a CA resident.

3.  No.  as a non-resident, you do not have to meet the CA health Insurance rules.  These only apply to CA residents.
