I was wondering what to do with my CA taxes. I live abroad and have been filing them due to my understanding that even with my driver's license they can still tax me. The thing is that my CA driver's license expired this year 2023. And I can't really renew it right now.
Do I still need to file my CA taxes? I want to say yes since it was 2022 but I just want to make sure.
Thank you for the help.

If you have no California source income you don’t have to file.
Not sure why you think merely having a CA driver's license means you pay tax to CA. If you do not have income from a CA source, you do not pay CA income tax. Have you thought about the fact that there are plenty of people--such as retirees living on Social Security--- who have CA driver's licenses and who live in CA, who do not pay CA income tax? Or residents of CA who receive unemployment, have CA driver's licenses, but do not have income taxable in CA. Having a CA driver's license does not determine whether you have to pay income tax to CA. If you have been paying CA income tax in past years when you had no CA sourced income, you could amend those state returns for the past three years.
