Believe there is a bug with schedule A, line 5a

Hello all,

I’m reviewing Schedule A and noticed that line 5a only reflects the state estimated payment related to my IRA withdrawal. However, in 2025 I also made an additional state estimated payment directly through the New Jersey portal (“NJ WEB PMT”).

Under the "Deductions & Credits" section, this additional payment is clearly entered in the state estimated tax payment field, but it is not being included on Schedule A, line 5a. I’ve double-checked this with both ChatGPT and Gemini, and my understanding is that this estimated payment should be included as well. The payment made through the NJ portal does appear correctly on my state return (NJ-1040, Page 2).

Before contacting TurboTax, I wanted to run this by the group as a quick sanity check.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best,
Dave

Please check to see which Quarter(s) you selected for reporting the state estimated payment(s).

First through Third 2025 Quarter payments will apply to the 2025 Schedule A.

Forth Quarter payments are usually paid in the year following the Tax Year of the return. In other words, the Fourth Quarter Payment for 2025 is usually paid January 15, 2026. Since it was paid in 2026, (not 2025) it won't count for the 2025 Federal Return Schedule A.

Next year, it can count for the 2026 Federal Return Schedule A.

If the same thing occurred in 2024, and you made a Fourth Quarter State Tax Payment on January 15, 2025, that payment will apply to your 2025 Federal tax return.

A Fourth Quarter State Estimated Payment made for 2024 but paid in 2025 is entered under:

  • Deductions & Credits
  • Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
  • Estimates
  • START or UPDATE
  • 2024 state estimated taxes paid in 2025

First through fourth quarter payments for 2025 are entered under:

  • Deductions & Credits
  • Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
  • Estimates
  • START or UPDATE
  • State estimated taxes for 2025

BUT THE "Tax Year 2025 FOURTH PAYMENT" WON'T BE ADDED TO SCHEDULE A IF IT WAS PAID IN 2026

Thank you!!!  I did put it in the 4rth quarter section.  I did pay in November 2025, however I was careless and did not pay attention to the date it was actually made.  Once I corrected the date as you suggested the amount was added to Schedule A as I would expect.

Thanks again for your deep insight!

Best regards,

Dave
