Same problem here. Solution I had was just to quit/exit TurboTax 2025, restart it, and then it worked the 2nd time. Didn't have to do anything different with the 2024 file, etc. Buggy software to not work the first time. Probably something in the file permissions that needs a restart in order to work correctly.
Make sure your One Drive is running on your PC....that fixed my issue...
I attempted the same option. I Exited Turbotax 2025 Desktop.
I then restarted Turbotax 2025 Desktop.
I picked the same tax file for 2024 that would not open the previous time.
This time it asked me for the password, which it had not done before. I keyed it in and it Transferred the file correctly!!!
I was really worried like everyone else that this product was going to fail. At least at this point I am verifying information from last year.
Good Luck to everyone!
2025 TurboTax may be the worst TurboTax in years. It can not import 2024 TurboTax return save in pdf.
It's best to transfer your .tax2024 file into TurboTax 2025, not the PDF file. You can search your computer for a .tax024 data file. The default location where TurboTax saves a tax file is Documents > TurboTax. You may have a backup file there (with a 'tilde' sign) that you can transfer to 2025.
Or, you can open TurboTax 2024 and re-save your file to your desktop. When you start a new return in TurboTax 2025, browse to that file to transfer.
Nope. That fails- I have a PhD not stupid here
you state obvious without reading
This worked for me using Apple silicon Mac (For both files 2024 and 2025)
That did the trick! Thanks
I also just closed out the software and re-opened it and it worked
That worked perfectly. No reason for the file to not import with the first try though. Hope the rest of the experience is not glitchy.
That worked for me! Thank you!
Finding last year's file and pressing Continue just brings up the file browser again. Over and over and over.
Garbage software, year after year. And thanks to the Republicans, we don't have the free online filing site we should have expected 20 years ago. They're protecting this trash and its peddlers.

If you're using a Mac, these are some of the common solutions that users with a transfer problem have been using:

I tried opening the .tax2024 in Turbo Tax 2024 and got error 190. Then I tried double clicking on the .tax2024 file and I get the same error saying the file is now on my computer error 190

If you are trying to do a transfer of 2024 data into 2025 software, you can try opening the 2024 data file with the 2025 software--not the 2024 software. The 2025 software can't do that, so you may then get an error notice such as "This is not a 2025 data file, would you like to transfer it instead." (or similar wording.) Another option for transferring (importing) from 2024 is to simply close TurboTax and relaunch it. Or close TurboTax and restart your computer, then relaunch TurboTax. Those simple maneuvers have worked for several in this thread.
Or if you DO indeed want to open the 2024 data file for some reason, here's why you are likely getting Error 190:
Error 190 usually means the *.tax2024 data file has a state return in it, but the 2024 program does not have the state software installed. Therefore, when TurboTax tries to open the 2024 file, it doesn't know how to handle the state information in the data file.
