Are we *still* awaiting IRS guidance on how to change our tax payment/direct debit date to align with the new May 17 deadline?

Yes, that is correct. There is not a way to amend the date through TurboTax for tax returns that have already been filed. You will need to go directly to the IRS and your applicable state(s).

Yes, we are still waiting on some changes to be made to allow the 5/17 payment date to be accepted via e-file. You can Sign up here for updates.

Please see this for more information: Why am I unable to choose payment dates after 4/15/2021 for taxes due

Are we *still* awaiting IRS guidance on how to change our tax payment/direct debit date to align with the new May 17 deadline?

i mean.....is there an easy option to say just "refile" and change the payment date?

Doesn't seem like any forward progress is being made on the ability to amend payment date (unless you advise differently)

The filing date of May 17, 2021 is available using TurboTax.  So any payment date on or before 05/17 can be used if you have updated your software using the desktop editions.

right but i have already filed, and already selected 4/15 as the date.

my inquiry was whether or not this could easily be amended/refiled with 5/17 as the updated date with no additional charges (at the state level too)

No, once the tax return is filed and accepted the date of payment cannot be changed unless you go to the IRS and State website to cancel the payment.   For the IRS -

Go to this IRS website for how to cancel a payment - https://www.irs.gov/payments/pay-taxes-by-electronic-funds-withdrawal

  • Once your return is accepted, information pertaining to your payment, such as account information, payment date, or amount, cannot be changed. If changes are needed, the only option is to cancel the payment and choose another payment method.
  • Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.
  • Cancellation requests must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. ET two business days prior to the scheduled payment date.

Once the tax payment has been canceled you can use the IRS payment website for Direct Pay to pay the taxes owed on or before May 17, 2021 - https://www.irs.gov/payments

To cancel the state tax payment you would need to go to the state department of revenue website for instructions.

ok got it. this is pretty different from the previous guidance that noted Turbotax was "waiting" on the IRS to provide guidance on how to amend the payment date.

So it sounds like no one is waiting for any ability to amend through Turbotax, users just need to deal directly with Federal Gov and State Gov to cancel and book new payment dates

correct?
