Amend older return: use 2024 TT or TT from prior year.

I need to amend my 2023 return.  It's in and archive folder on my pc...PDFs and what I believe is the TT formatted file.

I can not open the file with the 2024 software. I tried starting 2024 TT and browsing to my archive folder etc. It won't open.  I tried double clicking the TT file from windows explorer...still prompts me what software to use?  Must I reinstalled the 2023 software from CD to open? How does one access a prior year return to amend

To amend the 2023 tax return you will need to install the 2023 TurboTax desktop program.  Then Continue the 2023 return you want to amend.  Then -

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home & Business)

Click on Other Tax Situations

Under Other Tax Forms

On Amend a return, click on the start button

I assume that re installing 2023 will overwite the 2024 software so  I should finish that first?????

  Also there is no CD for 2024...if I overwrite it will it let me download it again should I need to next year?

You don’t need to uninstall 2024.  The 2023 program won’t overwrite 2024.  I have several different years all still installed on my computer at the same time.  And the tax files are separate too.  The tax data files end in .tax2023 and .tax2024.  

Yes if you lose a program you can download it again from your Turbo Tax account.  Since you now have to log into an Intuit Account all your downloads and licenses are listed there (even if you bought it from somewhere else) so if you need to download to install it again or install on another computer, even on the other operating system (Windows, Mac).  And the download will always be up to date with all the updates.
