I need to amend my 2020 return. While I was working on 2021 return I thought I saw something asking me something about amending. Can I amend my 2020 return using my 2021 software or do I have to submit a paper amendment? If I can use my 2021 software, do I have to do it after I submit my 2021 return?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
To file a 2020 amended return, you would now need the 2020 Desktop software, or if you filed a 2020 return with TurboTax, you can use the version you choose for 2020 (Online or CD) to do the amendment . You cannot use the 2021 software to file a 2020 amendment.
If you used TurboTax Online, simply log in to your account and select “Amend a return that was filed and accepted.”
If you used our CD/download product, sign back into your return and select “Amend a filed return.” You must file a separate Form 1040-X for each tax return you are amending.
You can also prepare an amended return by manually enter the information.
Federal 1040X form:
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040x.pdf
Federal 1040X instructions:
https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i1040x
To amend, please follow the instructions on the page How do I amend my 2020 return? You'll need to paper file your amended return since TurboTax doesn't currently support e-filing an amended prior-year return. You would use your 2020 software to amend your 2020 return, not your 2021 software.
Thank you. Our old computer died after we submitted our 2020 return. We have the 2020 Turbo Tax box and CD which we used, but our new computer doesn't have a CD slot. Can we still use turbo tax somehow to amend 2020?
If you purchased the Desktop software from TurboTax, then you should have a download of the 2020 software in your downloads.
If you don't have the download, you can contact TurboTax support, they maybe able to give you a download of the software. Click on the following link.

To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/
Scroll down to the section Your tax returns & documents. Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)
If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created. TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.
Or go to this IRS website for free federal tax return transcripts - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript
For a fee of $43 you can get a complete federal tax return from the IRS by completing Form 4506 - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf
The 2020 [desktop] software efiled the 1040 return, but I need to amend. When I open the TT file, it will NOT allow me to edit or get to the Step-by-Step process.

Start the 2020 tax program. Continue the tax return you want to amend.
Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home & Business)
Click on Other Tax Situations
Scroll down to Other Tax Forms
On Amend a return, click on the start button
Never mind - I was re-opening the original file when starting TT. After repeated attempts, I finally noticed the "Amend" option on the File/Open dialog.
Hello, I currently am trying to amend my 2020 return, but I am seeing that Form 1040-V is not being included in my print out even though the instructions from turbo tax says to include it with my payment. But then when I open the 1040-V form myself, the form instructions it does not mention 1040-X in terms of the use case when including a payment. May someone provide clarity on what I should be doing?

When you have taxes owed on the amended tax return, the Form 1040-V is not used. You only need to include a check for the taxes owed with the mailed tax return.
