My sister filed her taxes earlier this year for 2022, she worked a little bit last year first job, she was 17. I have always claimed her as a dependent, I help take care of her. I was going to get a few thousand back with her as a dependent. She amended her tax return and it was accepted, same day. But when I tried to add her as a dependent it didn’t go through same day. She was my dependent last 7 years. Is there anyway to fix? Professional I spoke to said to try again next day. It would have worked the 1st time if she never filed her own taxes, like all the other years. Thank you.

You can add her as a dependent on your 2022 tax return but the tax return can only be printed and mailed, it cannot be e-filed. If she amended her return to include that she can be claimed as a dependent then you will receive the Other Dependent credit on your return which is $500 since she is age 17 in 2022.

Do I have to file a paper return, if I never filed my taxes to begin with? I was a little late. She filed hers electronically months ago. We amended hers today and it was accepted today. Then we tried to attach her to my tax return electronically and it was rejected. So mail it in not electronic and it will be accepted, even if I never filed mine to begin with? Thank you

Your tax return can only be printed and mailed since her original tax return has already been accepted by the IRS. The IRS will not accept another e-filed tax return with the same Social Security number as already been received by the IRS.
You have to file by mail. Not sure how you are getting a big refund for claiming her if she turned 17 before the end of 2022---you cannot get the child tax credit for her. If she was older than 16 at the end of 2022, you do not get the CTC; you get the $500 credit for other dependents. Maybe you are getting earned income credit?
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Q. Professional I spoke to said to try again next day. Will that work?
A. No.
The situation you describe prevents you from e-filing. You must file a paper return.
