Active duty military don't have to pay fee when filing taxes?

Pay grades E1-E5 can use online Deluxe Edition for free Federal and free State returns.   You must enter a military W-2 and answer the military questions.   The discount is provided at the end during filing.

If you have a higher pay grade than E-5, you may still be able to file for free.  You can wait and use the FREEDOM Edition (not the regular Free Edition) when it comes on line mid-January.   Any active-duty pay grade can use that product if they meet the other criteria.  The Freedom Edition is more fully-featured than the Deluxe Edition in that it can prepare forms that Deluxe cannot, such as Schedules C,D,E,F, and enter K-1.

The Freedom Edition will open mid-January and is at:

Be aware that there is some risk in filing this early.  The IRS will not start processing returns until January 23 (except for a few test returns the IRS will pull early.).  Any returns filed early will just sit on TurboTax servers until then and cannot be retrieved if you notice something wrong.  You'd later have to file an amended return.

You must wait on any W-2's, 1099's, etc. to arrive first before filing.

And starting this year, if you have EIC (earned income credit) or ACTC (additional child tax credit), the IRS will not start releasing those refunds until February 15.

TurboTax has recently realized there is a problem with their Filing software for military....it would be smart for you to wait couple weeks for any other tax forms that might show up which need to entered before you actually file.......or you can sign up at this FAQ for notification when they fix it:
