"Activation Code Linked to Another Account" Problem

Hello,

Some background history which may be helpful:

Elder father-in-law setup and started TT Online via Fidelity Investments, because it was "free".

It got out of hand (vision problems), so he wanted to stop it, then buy a Desktop version to install.

I entered his online version with him, deleted the State taxes and did a "Clear and Start Over" on the entire return. Then deleted the Browser shortcut so he wouldn't' use that by mistake.

He purchased and my son successfully installed the Desktop version. Navigated to the first page. This page has two blue buttons towards the bottom; one says, "Start new return?", the other, "Continue online return".

All my father-in-law had to do was click on Start New Return.

But now (with a lot of cloudy input from his part) clicking on the TT2024 brings to a login page.  I'm able to sign in, but TT is asking for the activation code. I type this in (was already done, so I'm suspicious already) and the error is it's already linked to another account. Two slightly different usernames (accounts?) show up at the login page.  Turns out, one is the Online version username my father-in-law setup, the other is the one created when my son installed the Desktop version.

With some digging, I was able to access the Online account that was still there via Fidelity. It shows three different usernames/accounts. My son and I surmised grandpa clicked on "Continue with Online Return" instead of "Start New Return", and this screwed everything up.

On the online account there is an option to delete the account, but it warns of deleting all Intuit products if done. Is that just for the online product/account or all. Seems like now things are associated that shouldn't be and the deletion would/could delete Intuit products on his Desktop computer.

I know this is log winded, just trying to get as much info in here as possible.

Any help would be help would be appreciated and thanks for reading this.
