Question

A question about California extension with payment.

As for Federal extension, my understanding is that when  I pay for extension through  directpay on IRS website, it automatically files an extension and there is no need to file an extension form.

Does an extension for California  work same way,  or do I still need to file an extension form even if I made an extension payment electronically  through the FTB website ?

No application is required for an extension to file. CA gives you an automatic 6-month extension to file your return. You must file by the deadline October 15, 2024 to avoid a late filing penalty.

An extension to file your tax return is not an extension to pay. To avoid penalties and interest, pay the amount you owe by April 15, 2024.

To make a payment, use Payment for Automatic Extension for Individuals (FTB 3519) to make a payment by mail if both of the following apply:

    • You cannot file your 2023 tax return by April 15, 2024
    • You owe tax for 2023

To pay electronically, visit our payment options.
