I'm considering using turbo tax online to file my federal return. Is turbo tax free? And is there a charge to send the return electronically? Is live help readily available, or is this blog the only place to get help and the help is from random users?

You must visit the IRS at https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free
to find truly free filing. Note that some include free state as well; that's important.
1) When using the "Online" software, it's only Free for very simple tax returns where the Std Deduction is used, and no other special forms are required. Your opinion of "very simple" may vary from TTX's. Generally, that means just W-2 income, normal retirement1099-R forms, SSA-1099, and simple interest. BUT...If you have any stock/bond sales, and you have to upgrade to a paid version.....any special student stuff and you have to upgrade, any early withdrawal form retirement accounts and you have to upgrade.
2) When using the "Online" software e-filing is always free, but no discount if you end up having to mail-file for any reason.
3) The blog is the only place for help if you use the Online "Free" version. If you upgrade to one of the paid versions, there is some telephone help.....but if you want detailed help for potential specific situations, you have to upgrade even further to the "LIVE" versions to get someone to specifically work with you. I have no idea how easy/hard it is to get hold of them though......especially if you wait until the last few weeks to prepare and file.
(State forms preparation and filing...if you need that too...costs extra if you end up having to use one of the pay-for-it versions)
