Hi,
I included both my college aged daughters as dependents on our 2022 return. Since they work and earned enough to require filing, I also filed returns for them and have marked YES to the question in their returns "someone can claim you as a dependent." Their returns were accepted and ours was rejected because of this with a "A dependent SSN in the return must not be the same as th eprimary or spouse SSN on another return where 'Primaryclaimasdependentind' or spouseclaisasdependentind' is not checked. I'm not sure what do to?

Are you positive that both returns had "yes" for can be claimed on another's return?
You will have to mail in your tax return in this case, and you will not be able to e-file.
I would check both filed returns of your daughters carefully to make sure if all dependent information was carefully input. If it is determined that one of your daughters accidently claimed themselves as a dependent on their own tax return they will have to file an amended tax return to correct.
Hi and thanks for the response. Yes - I filled out the form for both and printed the Turbo tax forms and see the "x" for "Someone can claim me as a dependent." I went through the step by step process but when I went back to review and see if I could find any differences I switched over to the forms module and see that in Part II of the Personal Information Worksheet, I see both questions 1 & 2A are answered Yes bot questions 3, 4, 5 are not filled. Could these being blank potentially negate the "Yes?" in Q1 of the worksheet and "X" in Someone can claim you as a dependent n the Standard Deduction of the 1040?
Probably question 3 for your oldest child. See Publication 501 - Internal Revenue Service page 11 for rules to claim the dependent. A child over 18 must be a student.
Once your original return is accepted and the finances are settled, you can file an amended return.
You will want to mail your return. I would include form 8948 just to add the explanation.
Thank you, I think this makes sense as to why our return was rejected and I never would have noticed unless I had switched to "forms" view.
We are okay for paper filing but we also have NY non-resident income and it seems we are forced to e-file (my daughter does not). Would it be better to remove her as a dependent for now so we can e-file our federal and NY state tax return - amend my daughters' return and once that's been corrected, amend federal and state?
Yes. That is a practical solution to allow you to efile your federal and state return. Then you can amend both returns and then mail the amendments.
