2021 Taxes Done - Bought new computer - Transfer 2021 to new computer

I've completed my 2021 taxes -  I bought a new computer - I've installed 2021 Turbo Tax on the new computer - I'd like to transfer 2021 file to new computer -  Note - I have not filed my taxes yet and would like to file from the new computer.   My goal is to not have to reenter all of the information.  Thanks,

What you'll need to do is transfer your 2021 tax data file to your new computer.  I'm linking instructions for that below.  Follow the instructions carefully, as they are quite specific.

How do I move my tax data file to another computer?

You need to copy the tax file from the old computer.  It ends in .tax2021 and should be in your Documents then in a Turbo Tax folder.

What I would do is just copy the whole Turbo Tax folder that is under your Documents.  That should be where the .tax files and pdf files are stored.  Copy that folder to a flash drive or best yet is to burn it to a CD or DVD and then you will have a backup of them.   Then on the new computer copy the folder (or files) from the flash drive to your Documents folder.

After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to File-New Tax Return).

Then go to FILE -Open and find your return.

See this article on how to move your tax return to another computer…….

2021 Taxes Done - Bought new computer - Transfer 2021 to new computer

I was able to move  3 federal 2021 returns over to my new computer.  Two of the returns have the same State return and I was able to load them successfully after downloading that State.  The third return has a different State.  It is asking me to pay the second State download which I had previously purchased and used on my old computer.  Is there any way to avoid paying for the second State download again?  Will I need the 2021 state download if I do not plan any changes for 2021 taxes?  I will be buying the second State download for 2022.

No, you won't need the second state for your 2021 return if you're not going to Amend.   If you paid for a State Download in 2021, you may still be able to access your download for it.
