"This import was unsuccessful. The file you selected is too big. Don't worry, if it's still too big, we'll help you enter manually".
My computer crashed so I am using a new computer. My 2020 returns are saved as PDF's on my computer.
Any way to shorten this file to transfer successfully without having to enter manually?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You cannot use a TT PDF of the 2020 return to transfer into the 2021 program ... so you will need to just enter what is needed as needed OR recreate the 2020 return using the 2020 program so you have the correct file to transfer.
This is my mini version of a tutorial that should be in the downloaded program:
Forms Mode lets you view and make changes to your tax forms "behind the scenes."
If you're adventurous, you can even prepare your return in Forms Mode, but we don't recommend it. You may miss obscure credits and deductions you qualify for, and you may forget to report things that will come back and haunt you later.
Forms Mode is exclusively available in the TurboTax CD/Download software. It is not available in TurboTax Online.
If you want to play around with different figures and tax scenarios without affecting your original return you can ….
Once you have filed shut off the auto updater function and save the return and .taxfile.
It's always a good idea to make a backup copy of your tax data file, in case your original gets lost or corrupted. Here's how:
If you make changes to your original tax return file, repeat these steps to ensure your original and backup copies are in-synch.
AND save it as a PDF so you have access to a copy even if you don’t have the program still installed and operational :
AND protect the files :
*** Other clues to the downloaded program ***
In the forms mode ... double click or right click on a box on a form to data source it ... sadly it doesn't work on all boxes.
When you look at an onscreen tax form using Forms Mode, you might wonder why one figure is blue and the one next to it is red or black.
These colors indicate the source of that data.
Color | Meaning |
Blue | You entered this data, either in the interview or Forms Mode. |
Black | The program entered this data or calculated this amount. |
Red | This data has either been overridden or is invalid (for example, a ZIP code that doesn't exist). |
Red italics | You marked this amount as estimated. |
Black italics | The program calculated this amount from an amount you marked as estimated. |
Purple | This information has supporting details. |
Aquamarine | This data was transferred over from last year. |
Green | This data was imported from Quicken or QuickBooks. |
Yellow fields (Windows) | Yellow fields allow user input. Anything you enter here shows up in blue. |

What happened to your .tax2020 file?
That is the file you are supposed to use to transfer into your 2021 return. Can you locate it somehow?

And I wouldn't bother trying to transfer from a pdf. It only transfers very basic info like your name and address and AGI, nothing else. So you would still have to enter everything manually. You need the data file ending in .tax2020 to transfer. You don't have any backups? How do you have the pdf files and not the .tax2020 files? The files should have been in your Documents in a Turbo Tax folder.
If you don't have the main .tax file you might have one that starts with a Tilde sign ~ like "~your name.tax2020". That file is if your computer crashes or your real file gets lost or deleted or corrupt so you can restore it.
My computer crashed. I am using a new computer. My previous 10 returns were on the old computer which crashed and lost all data. I have used the CD version for the past 10 returns but decided to buy online this year as a download version. The PDF's I have were in my Gmail which I downloaded to my new computer.
Don't understand how the return can be "too big".
Don't know about too big either. But it's not worth it to transfer from a PDF. As I said it only transfers basic info. So you will have to enter everything else manually anyway. Sorry, hope you don't have too much complicated info like depreciation and carry overs. There's no difference between the CD and the Download versions except to install it. Download is better. Then you can install it on other computers too.
The .taxfile of the return is a compressed data file which needs the program to open and unpack the information onto the forms so that they can be seen ... this is a much smaller file than the PDF file which can have 200+ pages in it ... the program cannot "open" such a file saved as a PDF from the old TT program. Only PDF files from some select other company programs can be imported and what little does transfer is not worth the effort.
