2 states listed in Box 15 on my W2

Hello.

I live and work in VA but attended weeks of training in NC.  On box 15 it shows my total wages next to VA and that amount matches box 1, however there is a 2nd entry in box 15 for NC and that shows another $12,000.  Do I need to file 2 different state returns since 2 states are listed?

Do I assume the $12K listed under NC is included in the wages listed under the VA since that line already matches Box 1?  Thank you all for your help.

You do need to file two tax returns since you worked in North Carolina. If you end up owing taxes in North Carolina, you need to look for a credit for taxes paid to another state when you do your Virginia tax return. That will allow you to get credit for taxes paid to North Carolina against your Virginia tax. The wages reported for North Carolina will be included in your Virginia wages. Since you are a resident of Virginia, you will pay taxes there on your wages earned in North Carolina, but you will then get a credit on the taxes paid to North Carolina, so you won't end up being double taxed.
