Hello:

Much appreciate if someone may explain to me why I need to upgrade to Deluxe when I want to add 1099G (EDD earning)? Can I not able to use the Turbotax Free version to complete my tax with just W-2 and 1099G? Thank you so much!

No.   If you received unemployment benefits you cannot use the Free Edition.   That requires an upgrade to a paid version.

You might be able to use one of the free software programs on the IRS site:

Use this IRS site for other ways to file for free.  There are 8  free software versions available from the IRS Free File site

Thank you! So the Deluxe version will do, right? I just don't want to upgrade and it won't do the job, thanks!

Yes you can use Deluxe.  Remember that if you need to prepare a state return, that is another separate fee.  And....avoid saying you want to pay the fees from your federal refund.  If you choose that, it will add another extra $40 refund processing fee.    Pay your TT fees upfront using a credit or debit card BEFORE you e-file.

UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION

Unemployment compensation is taxable on your federal return.

You will have to enter a 1099G that is issued by your state.

Some states will mail out the 1099G.  Or you might need to go to your state’s unemployment website and use the password, etc. that you have been using to certify for weekly benefits to get your 1099G from the state’s site.

Enter your 1099G in Federal>Wages & Income>Unemployment

Go through the screens very carefully, making sure  to enter any federal/state tax you had withheld from the unemployment.
