1099-R Estate

I reeived 1099-Rfor my mothers Estate, not yet closed. She passed in 11-2024. Do I need to file this now or do I wait until the Estate closes?  If I file now, how do I do that??

If the estate received the 1099-R then the estate probably needs to file a 1041.

1099-R Estate

This is all so confusing.  My parents both passed in 11-2024, so I filed my parents final return for Tax year 2024 in April 2025.  I closed out this IRA in May 2025.  So the only form I need to fill out is the 1041 for the Estate?  haha I say only, I've gone over this form and it's confusing!  I called the IRS tonight at 8:30pm for help; they were closed!  The day before filing is due, they don't have a 24 hr. help line?? Ridiculous!

Usually retirement plans, annutiies, and the like will name beneficiaries and avoid probate and estate income tax filing for that purpose. If there is no beneficiary named, the estate becomes the beneficiary in a sense and then the estate receives the proceeds and needs to file a 1041.

If the 1099-R is in your name, it goes on your return. If in the estate name, it goes on the estate return. If the estate earned over $600, then you must file the 1041. Filing the estate return using our software is much easier than trying to navigate the form.

I am so sorry for your loss. I suggest you file an extension for the estate, giving you until Sep 30 and another for your personal return as you may get a k-1 from the estate that goes on your personal return.

For the estate, at this point, I recommend you pay $1 and file with the IRS directly.

  1. Go to IRS.gov Direct Pay.
  2. Select "Business Tax" (Note: Do not pick individual).
  3. Select "Trust or Estate Income Tax (Form 1041)".
  4. Select "Extension" as the reason for payment.
  5. Paying this way acts as an automatic extension request

Your other option is to print the  About Form 7004, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File Certain Business Income Tax, In... and mail it in. Send it certified, no signature required.

For your personal, filing an extension by April 15, 2026, moves your submission deadline to October 15. But remember any taxes owed are still due in full by the original April 15 date.  Pay through either Direct Pay or your individual online account
