I received rent assistance through Community action and therefore was sent a 1099-MISC for tax purposes. However, the amount is in box one and wants to treat it like income from a rental property which is not the case.  How do I correctly enter this?

This income will be reported as other income because you are not in the business of renting out real estate to others. This was money provided to you through a third party if it didn't come directly through your hands.  The information below will show you how to report it.

While you are logged into your TurboTax Premier desktop account follow the steps.

  1. Choose the Federal Taxes tab
  2. Wages & Income
  3. Scroll to Less Common Income
  4. Select Miscellaneous Income
  5. Select Other reportable income
  6. Enter the description and amount (image attached)
