1099-G reports state and income return but no option when selecting type

I got my 1099-G and reported it as a state refund, however TurboTax is only asking me what type it is and won't let me select an 'other' or 'state or local refund' and I can't move on. I've followed another answer which had me report it as a state refund, but moving on from income TurboTax thinks I have to select a type but none of the types apply.

1099-G reports state and income return but no option when selecting type

Is it for a state tax refund you got?  If it’s asking why you got a 1099G you are in the wrong place.  Delete out of this one.

To enter a state refund just type  1099-G (with the dash)  in the search box at the top of your return and click on Jump To it.

OR  Enter the 1099G under

 Federal on left

Wages & Income

Scroll down to 1099-Misc and  Other Common Income

You might need click on Show More to expand the section

Then it's the first line for Refunds Received for State/Local Tax Returns - Click Start

You do not want the next line that says Other 1099G Income

On the first screen check YES - Received a State Refund.

But you might not need to enter it at all.

A State Tax Refund is taxable if you itemized deductions on that prior year's federal return and took a deduction for state income taxes instead of the sale tax.  You got a deduction benefit for it so now you have to include it as income. If you took the standard deduction it is not taxable and you don't need to report it.

1099-G reports state and income return but no option when selecting type

Start by deleting the 1099-G that you entered.  You can do this by clicking tools>>Tax tools>>Delete a form then delete next to the 1099-G.

What was this 1099-G for?  If it was for a state refund, did you itemize your return last year?  If not, then you do not need to enter it on your return at all.  If you did itemize last year and received a refund then you will need to enter the 1099-G under Other Common Income State and Local Tax Refunds.

If it is for taxable grants or some other government payments, then you can select Other 1099-G Income.

If it is for Unemployment, then you would need to enter it where unemployment benefits on form 1099-G.

So basically, after you delete the 1099-G that is giving you errors, be sure to enter it in the correct spot for the type of 1099-G it is.

Thanks, I don't know why it was entered in twice, but that looks like it solved it.
