1099-G Form

Why does TT prompt me to put in my state income tax return amount to determine whether it is taxable income ? It also asks whether my last year's return was itemized or standard deduction. I have always done standard deduction and have never received a 1099-G form from my state to file for a tax return I received. It is just strange to me.

Why would someone receive a 1099-G form anyway? Thank You.

If you took the Standard Deduction last year then your state refund is not taxable and you don't have to enter it.

I don't know why  you got a 1099G.  You have to ask the state.  But they are suppose to send you a 1099G if you got a state refund.  But a lot of states are not sending it.  I guess you are suppose to get it from the state's website.   You don't need a 1099G.  You should know if you got a state refund last year and the amount.

Thanks for replying! To be clear, I did not receive a 1099 G form nor was I expecting one. My question was why does TT prompt me to enter in information as if I have received one. No, my state does not mail them out and I was not aware that I am supposed to receive one considering I do not itemize and only receive the standard deduction. Yes, I did receive a state refund last year.

I can't tell why you would be prompted for 1099-G information.

The 1099-G is issued for

  • Unemployment compensation
  • State/local income tax refunds, credits, or offsets,
  • It can also include taxable grants, agricultural payments, or Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) loan payments.

Did you possibly enter something in the interview process.

If you didn't get a 1099-G last year or this year, you don't need the form and can delete it.
