1098-T Box 1 Question

I am having a rough time figuring out what the total amount is that was paid for my daughter's tuition. I know Box 1 is only listing what part of the scholarship/grant money paid for the Fall 2024 semester as the remainder of that goes towards the Spring 2025. For Box 1 I need to select "this is not what daughter paid" and include the total amount of her tuition from Spring and Fall 2024? This does not include any other bills for room and board as she lives on campus? Thank you.

1098-T Box 1 Question

Box 1 is what the school received, that is not normally adjusted.

Box 5 is scholarships. Scholarships sometimes cross years, so those are sometimes adjusted.

When you say “I know Box 1 is only listing what part of the scholarship/grant money paid for the Fall 2024 semester as the remainder of that goes towards the Spring 2025.” that could be true, but usually the school bills and takes payments for January classes in December, so they USUALLY ARE listed in Box 1.

Get the student's school payment statement and compare that with the student's 1098-T.

If the scholarship in Box 5 is paying for 2025 classes that were not billed in December, select "Some of the scholarship was not for this year" after entering the 1098-T (on a later screen) and enter the amount that will cover 2025 tuition which will be in Box 1 on the 2025 1098-T.  If that is the case, next year you may need to adjust once more for the amount of scholarship you subtracted off the 2024 1098-T.
