I purchased a boat in 2017. Can I deduct the sales tax I paid in the state of Florida on my federal taxes?

Yes.

Common major purchases include:

  • Vehicles
  • Off-road vehicle

You can also include:

  • Aircraft
  • Boats
  • Mobile homes
  • Manufactured housing
  • Building materials for major home improvements

These items are not considered to be major purchases:

  • Furniture
  • Jewelry
  • Computers
  • Televisions or other electronic equipment
  • Items purchased for your business or rental property

Yes, you can claim the sales tax paid for your boat. 

When entering sales tax items, you can only use your own state and local sales tax rate where you lived. If you paid a higher rate, for example, by buying a boat out-of-state, you can only include what the tax would have been using your state and local tax rate.
