I had one dependent not a child will that count as the child tax?
Yes & no.
You do not get the (up to) $2000 Child tax credit. But, there is a separate dependent credit ($500) for dependents over age 16. It is non refundable and can only be used to reduce your calculated tax.

No. It's only the refundable credits that delay refunds
