How to enter personal property tax for cars

Yes, if you are itemizing your deductions, then you can deduct state and local taxes that you pay for your personal property. Personal property is all property except real property (such as your home, vacation home, and rental property). Examples of personal property that are often taxed include vehicles, boats, recreational vehicles, airplanes, and mobile homes. The taxes must be assessed annually and must be based on the value of personal property you own.

To enter your Personal Property Taxes take the following steps:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax Online, then click take me to my return, then pick up where I left off;
  2. Click on Federal Taxes at the top of the screen, then click on Deductions & Credits.
  3. Click the blue link at the bottom of the Deductions & Credits screen that says check for other tax breaks to find the section titled Cars and Other Things You Own;
  4. Then click Start or Update next to the Personal Property Taxes to begin.

If you're using TurboTax CD/Download then take these steps:

  1. Open your tax return on your computer.
  2. Click Federal Taxes at the top of the screen, then click on Deductions & Credits (pick I'll chose what to work on, if asked.)
  3. Scroll down to Cars and Other Things You Own.
  4. Then click Start or Update next to the Personal Property Taxes to begin.
