You cannot deduct mileage on a personal vehicle that is not used in a business.
You cannot deduct employee business expenses on a federal tax return due to the tax code changes in effect for tax years 2018 thru 2025.
However, you may be able to deduct mileage used for charitable purposes.
If you use your privately owned vehicle for business purposes, you can deduct your expenses under the business or rental activity to which it relates.
If you are an employee, you generally can't deduct the use of your personal vehicle.
If you are a qualified Armed Forces reservist, you may be able to deduct your mileage for drill duties.
Qualified performing artists, fee-basis state or local government officials and employees with impairment-related work expenses are able to deduct their mileage in limited circumstances.
You can take a reduced mileage rate for volunteer work (.14 per mile), medical transportation (.16 per mile) and moving (.16 per mile), but moving expenses are no longer deductible except for military servicemembers and their families. These deductions are part of itemized deductions.
