There is a very common reason that taxpayers are not eligible to claim the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit on Form 8911. It is related to the tentative minimum tax calculation.
Even though you may not be subject to Alternative Minimum Tax, it is calculated at the same time as the regular income tax. The tentative minimum tax is compared to your regular income tax on Form 8911. If the tentative minimum tax is greater than the regular tax, then the Form 8911 credit is disallowed.
The lines in question are Form 8911 line 17 and line 16. If line 17 is greater than line 16, then the credit is disallowed due to the tentative minimum tax.
Even though Form 8911 will not be included as part of your tax return because the credit is disallowed, you should be able to specify Form 8911 to be printed or previewed from the Print Center using TurboTax Online to take a look at the details. Or, go to Forms at the top of the screen if you are using a Desktop version of the program, then search for Form 8911.
Thank you for responding so quickly. In my case, the tentative minimum tax is less than the regular tax by a larger value than the credit I was expecting I was able to see both the regular tax and the tentative minimum tax by going through the AMT calculation. Could there be another reason for the 0 value?
I have not found where the actual forms are as filled out by TurboTax. I'm using the on-line version. Maybe I need to pay before I see the forms? I'm a bit reluctant to pay if the tax calculation is incorrect.
It's looking like a bug in TurboTax. When I review the forms before filing, I can see "Schedule A" for form 8911, which shows the credit I'm expecting. But I do not see a Form 8911 generated, which would have the credit calculation that considers the tentative minimum tax.
I'm having this same problem, I see Schedule A for Form 8911 but can't see Form 8911 and the tax credit isn't being reflected in my return. I paid and printed to PDF my whole return (without submitting it yet).
I called Turbotax. I spoke to a customer service rep who said that Form 8911 won't be available until Feb 21, 2025. So I guess we'll have to wait.
FWIW - I had to trick turbo tax into letting back in to ammend my return. The customer service rep walked me through that. I think it was just going into state and editing state, and then my whole return became editable.
I tried again today. Same problem. After being on the phone with them for 30 minutes, they are saying it won't be available until march. I'm going to try TaxAct or something for filing instead. This is ridiculous.
