Why does the amount of tax I owe to the state of Colorado increase when I enter my charitable monetary donations?

Before I enter my charitable donations, TurboTax says my federal tax due is $80 and my federal tax due is $677.

When I enter my first charitable donation of $10,300, the federal tax due doesn't change, but the Colorado tax due drops to $236.

When I enter my second charitable donation of $1,924, the federal amount stays the same again, and the state tax due drops to $149.

But it's the third charitable donation that confuses me. When I enter that amount ($1,175) , the federal tax due drops to $56 and the state tax due increases to $677.

Does anyone know why the Colorado tax due goes up when I enter my charitable donations?

Review the calculations through the Tax Summary.

  • From the menu on the left, choose Tax Tools
  • Click on Tools
  • Choose View Tax Summary
  • Again from the menu on the left, you can Preview my 1040 (Federal) or CO Tax Summary

View it both before and after the entries to see what is happening with your calculations.
