Why do I not have a free preparation return. I did not choose deluxe. I only have Social Security income and $5.00 of interest income. I use the standard deduction

If your only income was Social Security and $5 of interest income you are not even required to file a tax return unless you had tax withheld from your SS and want to get a refund.  Or....if you had marketplace insurance and have a 1095A to enter.

Who has to file?

If you have not submitted or paid for your return as yet you can follow the steps below to change from Deluxe to free.

Please keep in mind, in order to complete a downgrade you will be required to completely clear your information already entered and start all over.

  1. If you haven't already done so, sign in to your  TurboTax Online account and select the blue Take me to my return button.
  2. On the Welcome Back screen, in the left-side menu, select Tax Tools, and then select Clear & Start Over (click or tap the 3 lines in the upper-left corner if you don't see this menu).
  3. Answer Yes in the pop-up to confirm.

Once this process is complete you will be asked to select your TurboTax version again.

See the steps below on how to enter your Social Security Income:

  1. Open (continue) your return in TurboTax
  2. In the search bar, search for the term Social Security benefits and then select the Jump to link at the top of your search results
  3. On the screen Did you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits in 20XX? answer Yes and select Continue
  4. On the next screen, check the box beside Social Security benefits (Form SSA-1099), then enter the amounts from your form(s) in the boxes provided
  5. Select Continue and follow the on-screen instructions
