Where should I enter CarryOver taxes in TT Premier?

Hi there, I see the following in my previous year's tax return. Where should I enter that in TurboTax Premier for State ? I tried entering it under Federal> Deductions and Credits> Estimates and Other Taxes Paid> Other Income Taxes-> Balance due on your 2018 local taxes paid in 2019.

I did not file extension last year and had paid off that amount in 2018, so not sure if this is the right way to enter it, and secondly, it did not appear in my State Tax form 540.  Thank you.

Only state and/or local income taxes actually paid in 2019 can be deducted on a 2019 Federal tax return as an itemized deduction on Schedule A.  If the taxes were paid in 2018 then you have nothing to enter on the 2019 tax return for that payment.

Otherwise -

To enter state and/or local income taxes paid -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Deductions and Credits
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
  • On Other Income Taxes, click on the start or update button

On the next screen scroll down to Other Income Taxes Paid in 2019

Or enter state taxes paid in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to state taxes paid

Did you not get a sufficient answer in the thread at the link below?

You should probably speak with your tax advisor, the individual who prepared your 2018 return, and inquire as to exactly how the situation was handled for that year.

Sorry for the duplicate, I didn't get satisfactory answer so far, hence I tried to post again with modification in case my question wasn't clear. My question is about where to enter in TurboTax Premier, so my Tax Advisor won't know that. Hence my request here.

I understand, but do not want to step on @Bsch4477 whom I believe was responding and will hopefully respond in this thread or the other.

Recall that there are different carryovers so you might want to be more specific with respect to exactly what remained after filing your 2018 return, if possible.

Thanks a lot DoninGA! Not sure why my tax consultant added the amount I had paid in 2018 in my 2019 tax return even though it says Carrover. I understand that's not allowed and will not do that when I file with TurboTax from next year. Thanks again for that clarification.
