Teachers can claim the Educator Expense Deduction regardless of whether they take the standard deduction or itemize their tax deductions .
You can claim the deduction on Form 1040 or Form 1040A, but not on Form 1040EZ.
However, your potential deduction isn't necessarily limited to $250 per teacher—so don't stop keeping track at $250. That's because your expenses in excess of $250 can count as "unreimbursed employee expenses."
Please follow the instructions below to enter your Educator Expense deduction:
Or try this for online.
To enter your Educator Expenses in TurboTax:
Note: If using the TurboTax CD/Download software, you'll use the Find function (instead of "My Account") to search for the topic.
My wife and I are both teachers. We each put in for the $250 Educator Deduction, which should total $500. TurboTax only counts $250 even though my wife and I both had the deduction. Is it still limited to $250 even if filing jointly? I read the help section and it was not specified.
You should each be able to claim it. Go back to the screen where you entered it. There should be spots with each of your names so that you can enter it for both of you. Whenever you file a joint return there are spots with each spouse's names for income and certain credits.
