I entered my vehicle Registration fees like I do every year. After doing the Federal portion of my taxes on the Deductions page it shows I entered the amount $283 for this year, it also shows last year was $283. I used the standard deduction both years and after the Federal portion is finished it shows Reviewed your 2022 and 2023 Deductions and Credits. However on this page it shows 2023 vehicle Registration fees as $0 while showing last year was at $283. It was entered and I didn't do anything different than last year, I was wondering why it comes up $0? Is this a glitch?

No, the summary before the review shows everything entered, the summary after the review shows deductions taken. So, if you took the standard deduction, it would show $0 for any itemized deduction. You can switch to itemized deductions to see that amount included - - but make sure to change it back.
Just don't see why it is shown different from the previous year. I did standard deduction both times. I did not do itemized deductions.
It is not going to show after reviewing because you took the standard deduction. Car registration fees are only deductible if you itemize. Since you did not itemize, it does not get sent with your tax return. You are looking at information sent with your tax return. If you had medical expenses entered, those too, would not be included.
Not understanding than why was it entered for the previous year?
Same thing just happened to me.
If you took the standard deduction, TurboTax does not include your itemized deductions. If you are itemizing and the amount is not being included, then there is a problem, but if you are taking the standard deduction, your car registration does not factor in. Are you taking the standard deduction? @ehomich01
Schedule A is where you will see itemized deductions - and Schedule A is not included with returns that elect the standard deduction. If you switch to itemizing, you will see your car registration fees on Schedule A.
Had same exact oddity as you did. Just strange it is not showing the same way as previous year if everything the same!
People keep replying with the same.
Last year, our vehicle registrations appeared to have saved us some tax. Last year, it seems all of us have itemized. This year, the vehicle registration no longer shows. So we're all thinking exactly the same thing. If the policy or law changed, the summary sheet is certainly making it difficut to discern. Did we get an unfair deduction last year if we itemized?
Nothing has changed this year with regard to the deductibility of car registration fees on the Federal return.
You may have seen a screen in TurboTax that summarized all of the potentially deductible items you entered, but you will only get a deduction for them if your total itemizable deductions exceed your standard deduction, or if you tell TurboTax where prompted to take the itemized deductions even if they are less (such as married filing separately and the other spouse itemizes).
You can review your forms and worksheets for 2022 to determine what happened on that return.
To print your tax return worksheets and schedules after you file, in TurboTax Online, please follow these instructions:
Your car registration fee is deductible if it’s a yearly fee based on the value of your vehicle and you itemize your deductions.
You can’t deduct the total amount you paid, only the portion of the fee that’s based on your vehicle’s value.
In addition, not all states have value-based registration fees. See this TurboTax help article for a list of states and the type of registration fees they charge. In some states, you deduct a personal property tax instead of vehicle registration.
Why is my Vehicle Registration fees Not Showing in Review. Please inform as soon as possible.
Are you itemizing? Those fees (property taxes) are an itemized deduction. They are not included if you take the standard deduction. @lillian7781
Thanks for responding. You erased my stress!
I've always taken the standard deduction year after year. why does it seem different this year? I always see the value I entered even when I take the standard deduction. The software is usually pretty good on informing that there is not a need to anything if you declare certain thing. Should it not have allowed us to enter registration fees if standard? it gets confusing cause previous years showed the top number fluctuates.
You can still enter your itemized deductions in your Federal return, even though you're using the Standard Deduction. People like to do so, because their State may give them some of those deductions to claim.
