This reply doesn't seem accurate. Like most all of the other posters here, the screen shows the Standard Deduction AND the Vehicle Registration Fees amount entered for 2022, and the Standard Deduction AND zero dollars for the Vehicle Registration Fees, even though there were dollar amounts entered as with 2022.
Here's a screen shot so we're on the same page. I highlighted the discrepancy we're referring to.
If you look at 2022 the amount is there but you received no deduction for the registration fees. Not sure why the amount isn't showing up in 2023 but you still won't receive a deduction for the registration fees. These are a state deduction if your state allows a deduction for it.
Thanks, RobertB4444! Yes, I understood that part and that the amounts won't count since we're getting the standard deduction. However, I just wanted to show what we're talking about since the expert responders were answering in a way that indicated it wouldn't show there, either last year or this year, and that nothing had changed from last year to this year. However, as you can see, there is a change in the display and is likely just a technical/programming difference and not related to the tax rules and how are deductions are processed.
Hello,
I have the same question...in 2023 I filed a "Standard Tax Form" and entered my registration paid for that year in Arizona. This year, in 2024...I was filling in the car information and entered my car registration for this year. Again, we are filing a "Standard Form". So, when it came time to show the credits...it showed last years registration but it did not show this years registration...I understand what you said about deductions vs Standard but what I don't understand is why one year it shows the registration fee and the next it doesn't beings that both years are Standard Filing?
TurboTax showed the registration fees as a potential state tax deduction. But it clearly caused a lot of confusion. And TurboTax does not show those fees anymore.
Vehicle Registration fees Not Showing in Review
If you claimed the Standard Deduction this year rather than itemizing, the Vehicle Registration fees will not show on the Review screen.
I see the same issue. None of the "Tax Experts" here have read the question carefully. Thus, none of the experts have answered the actual question. The question is not: whether the Vehicle License Fee (VLF) is deductible, when you don't itemize. The actual question: why I see a VLF of $400 as a deduction in the summary's column for 2023, and I see a Zero in the column for 2024. I entered my VLF into my 2023 and 2024 TurboTax returns. In both both 2023 and 2024 I took the standard deduction. The 2023 column is not Zero VLF, while the 2024 column is Zero VLF. This difference between the 2023 and 2024 column seems to indicate a software error, if we assume the law has not changed regarding deductibility of VLF.
