TurboTax gave me the option to use my 2019 income for the EIC but the IRS adjusted my refund and said I don’t qualify. How can I ratify this?

This isn’t an error on my end

You'll need to wait until you receive a notice from the IRS telling you of the changes that were made to your return.

There'll be a phone number provided that you can call, and also instructions on how to contest the change.

Thanks. I’ve tried this twice and can’t get through. I was hoping someone from TurboTax could give me some information on the notice I received.

Please provide information on the notice received.  What is the Notice number and the explanation provided by the IRS.  We can help you if you provide some details.  There can be several reasons why the IRS may have adjusted your return.  If you had Unemployment Compensation on the return there is an exclusion that may have affected your return.

If your earned income was higher in 2019 than in 2020, you can use the 2019 amount to figure your EITC for 2020.  That is the Lookback Rule for claiming Earned Income Credit on your 2020 Tax return.

Yes, thanks! It was CP12 and it said “the amount calmed as EIC was figured or entered incorrectly on your tax return.” If I use my 2020 income For EIC, on TurboTax is says I don’t qualify, but if I use the 2020, then it says I do. However, that information seems to have gotten lost somewhere when filing?

If you have tried to reach the IRS to no avail, I suggest contacting them by mail.  I agree that there is an issue with IRS recognizing the 2019 information.  However, there may some other adjustment that is causing this to occur that can only be resolved with establishing contact with the IRS.  IRS does not provide any information to TurboTax on changes they make to returns because of privacy issues.  Your only option is to deal directly with the IRS.

What you need to do

  • Review the notice and compare our changes to the information on your tax return.
  • If you agree with the changes we made, no response is required.
    • You should receive a refund check in 4-6 weeks, as long as you don't owe other tax or debts we're required to collect.
    • You may want to correct the copy of your tax return that you kept for your records, but do not send it to us.
  • If you don’t agree, contact us within 60 days of the date of your notice.
    • By telephone: Call us at the telephone number shown on your notice. The fastest way to resolve many return errors is by telephone. Some cases require additional information that you may provide verbally. If a missing or corrected form or document is needed, you may fax it to us while on the telephone. Either way, we may be able to correct your account immediately.
    •
    • By mail: Please include a copy of the notice along with your correspondence or documentation and allow 30-60 or more days for a resolution.
