Why would I change my deduction? (From TurboTax)
We've recommended the deduction that would get you the biggest refund based on what we know, but there are a few rare situations that may cause you to choose differently.
- If you live in a state that requires you to take the same deduction as your federal—either Standard or Itemized—you may get a better combined outcome with a different choice.
- You want to avoid taxes on your state refund next year. When you itemize, your state refund is taxable up to the amount that it benefits your federal return. If that would create a higher tax burden for you next year (this is unusual), you might opt for the Standard Deduction.
- You prefer to pay more in taxes.
