You can change from Itemized to Standard, but may not be able to from Standard to Itemized.

 Select Tax Tools

  • This is on the left sidebar
  • You may have to minimize the Federal and State options
  • You also may have to scroll down on that menu
  1. Once you can work on Tax Tools
  2. On the drop-down select Tools
  3. There will be 3 or 4 green boxes
  4. Select Topics Search
  5. Type Itemized deductions
  6. Scroll down one space
  7. You will see Itemized deductions, Choosing
  8. Click Go
  9. You will see XXXXX Deduction is right for you
  10. Select [Change my deduction]

Why would I change my deduction? (From TurboTax)

We've recommended the deduction that would get you the biggest refund based on what we know, but there are a few rare situations that may cause you to choose differently.

  • If you live in a state that requires you to take the same deduction as your federal—either Standard or Itemized—you may get a better combined outcome with a different choice.
  • You want to avoid taxes on your state refund next year. When you itemize, your state refund is taxable up to the amount that it benefits your federal return. If that would create a higher tax burden for you next year (this is unusual), you might opt for the Standard Deduction.
  • You prefer to pay more in taxes.
